Let’s Talk Money: benefits and how to claim them

As part of the Let’s Talk Money campaign, Age Scotland’s Information Manager Heather Smith blogs about benefits and how you can claim them.

Man receiving advice

April is a good time to spring clean your finances and make sure you are claiming all your benefit rights and entitlements.

Every year up to £5.5 billion of pension credit, housing benefit (help with rent) and council tax benefit goes unclaimed by older people in the UK.

The benefits system can seem like a bit of a maze, but there are plenty of people who want to help you find the way to your rights.

As benefit rates changed at the beginning of April there will be people who suddenly become entitled to a small amount of benefits – a small amount of Pension Credit is definitely worth claiming as it could make it easier for you to get help with other things such as housing and council tax benefit or help with health costs.  Even £2 a week in benefits amounts to £104 over the course of a year!

Different benefits are paid by different agencies (the Department for Work and Pensions or your local council).

If you’re not sure where to start checking out your benefit rights, or want more information before you make a claim, call the Age Scotland Helpline on 0845 125 9732 or check out our website www.agescotland.org.uk and try our benefits calculator.
